Storm claims: from reaction to prevention
Precise alerts on exposed assets, objective data for handling files, a preventive approach to a structurally rising claims burden.
€5.2 billion: the cost of weather for insurers in 2025
The figure comes from France Assureurs: the total cost of climate-related claims in France reached 5.2 billion euros in 2025, ranking the year 9th by cost for the industry since 1982. The heaviest item: hail, with 2.2 billion euros in payouts.
Estimated cost of a single hail episode in the Paris region on 3 May 2025, including 196 million in motor payouts for 61,630 damaged vehicles (source: France Assureurs).
Total cost of hail in France in 2022, an all-time record since 1984, smashing the previous ceiling of 1.3 billion euros (source: climate insurance mission report, Ministry for the Ecological Transition).
The structural trend is upward. Between 1982 and 1989, the annual average was 1.6 billion. Between 1990 and 2009, it rose to 2.7 billion. Over the last five years, it exceeds 3.9 billion in constant euros.
The role of advance alerts in reducing claims
Part of the damage from storm episodes is unavoidable. When 4 to 5 cm hailstones hit an area, exposed roofs and vehicles take damage regardless of preparation. But another part of the claims is directly tied to policyholders' lack of anticipation.
A vehicle parked outside when its owner could have put it in a garage. Farm equipment left in the open when it could have been sheltered. Windows left open. Unsecured objects on a terrace. These partly avoidable claims represent a significant volume. Reducing them depends on an effective alert, early enough for the policyholder to act, and precise enough that they know whether their area is genuinely concerned.
What Storm Predict can bring to the insurance sector
An alert tool for exposed policyholders
The first possible use is integrating a geolocated weather-alert tool into offers for the most exposed policyholders. Rather than a general-purpose service, an alert on the policyholder's precise home or assets, with an actionable lead time, is concrete added value.
Vehicles with no shelter
In May 2025, 61,630 vehicles were damaged in the Paris region. Some of these owners could have found shelter with an early alert. Average repair: 3,000 to 5,000 euros.
Farmers
Some farmers aren't insured against climate hazards. For them, anticipation is their only effective protection.
Fleet managers
Vehicle rental firms, car-sharing fleets: managing the weather for an exposed vehicle fleet is a real economic issue. Storm Predict can monitor parking areas.
Objective data for claims handling
Storm Predict keeps a history of alerts issued and phenomena detected for each configured spot, with timestamps and characterization (lightning, hail, gusts). This data is an objective source of information on what actually happened at a given place, at the declared time.
This information helps make claims handling objective, distinguish claims linked to a verified weather event from those that aren't, and speed up payout procedures in clear cases.
The CCR's warning
The Caisse Centrale de Réassurance has explicitly framed the risk: if 2022 levels were to recur regularly, the question of whether hail remains insurable at an affordable price could arise. This isn't a distant projection. It is a systemic risk that is starting to shape the sector's thinking. Active prevention is becoming a strategic lever, not just a commercial argument.
Service limits
Storm Predict is not an exhaustive territory-monitoring system. It covers the areas configured as monitoring spots. It is not a legal meteorological-expertise tool: its data is a complementary source, not an official certificate replacing Météo-France records.
